If I remain seated, no one will see me

Language is thick, arid, wounded; the animism of words turned poems. They oscillate between inside, outside the page, to and from the body.

‘If I remain seated no one will see me’ is part of a series of evenings at Perdu that insists on relating South American poetics to the local poetry scene. How does our migratory presence germinate? Towards whom, where, when? At what time is it decided to remain in the emotionality of cacophonic words? This evening unites the artistic and poetic practices of Adelaide Ivánova and Clara Amaral.

Adelaide Ivánova orients poems impregnated with piercing gazes. She reverts hatred to horniness to desire; a joke catches the reader off guard. Her poetic mechanisms gather gunpowder, she administers revenge with subtlety, activating a signal in our chests. Adelaide reads from a collection of poems, including her upcoming book Asma. Her readings include a plurality of rhythms, raps and conversations.

Clara Amaral performs Time had Girl’s back. Clara’s reading incites our sensory perceptions and cognitive capacities. She questions time and incites to re-imagine our presence as audience-readers. Her voice suggests suspiciousness while her body intimately orients the listeners towards the text. The circuit of our breathing mimics the choreography of our hands. Poem, premonition, passage. Fingers invert the clock’s hands, oracles overlap. The beginning of the reading is absent, the skin is ashore.

Adelaide Ivánova is dichter en activist voor huisvestingsrechten uit Pernambuco, die sinds 2011 in Berlijn woont. Ze laveert tussen poëzie, journalistiek, fotografie, performance, vertaling, politieke vorming en redactie en heeft 9 boeken gepubliceerd. In 2018 won haar tweede boek, o martelo (de hamer), de Rio de Literatura Prijs in de categorie poëzie. Haar gedichten en essays zijn vertaald in het Duits, Galicisch, Engels, Catalaans, Spaans, Grieks, Italiaans, Ests, Zweeds en Russisch. In april 2024 verschijnt haar vijfde boek, ASMA, bij Nós Editora, aanbevolen door de krant O Estado de São Paulo als een van de 15 boeken om naar uit te kijken in 2024.

Clara Amaral is een kunstenaar die werkt met schrijven, performance, drukwerk en publiceren. Haar interdisciplinaire praktijk stelt de vraag wat het betekent om lezer en schrijver te zijn, met als doel de bestaande manieren van lezen, schrijven en publiceren uit te breiden. Centraal in haar praktijk staat het onderzoek naar publicatiemodaliteiten en het performatieve aspect van taal. Haar werk is gepresenteerd in onder andere Nederland, Portugal, Spanje, België, Zweden, Oostenrijk, Frankrijk, Noorwegen en Zwitserland.
Sinds 2022 geeft Clara Amaral les aan de afdeling Image and Language van de Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Clara Amaral wordt momenteel vertegenwoordigd door Ellen de Bruijne Projects.
